Aitutaki Activities
With its expansive and breathtakingly beautiful lagoon (around 19-21 kilometres at its widest point), Aitutaki activities primarily revolve around its most awe-inspiring asset.
Lagoon Cruises
No visitor to Aitutaki atoll should leave without taking at least one lagoon cruise. In fact there are a number of different day trips on the lagoon to enjoy, so taking more than one cruise is a great idea! Lagoon Cruises usually consist of a leisurely covered boat trip across the lagoon to visit uninhabited motus (small islands, or 'islets'). Enjoy snorkelling and a barbecue lunch before returning to Aitutaki island.
Kayaking
Most resorts and lodgings have kayaks for guest use. Have fun paddling out on the lagoon (which is an average 4.5 metres in depth so quite shallow). Take your hat and sunscreen lotion!
Scuba Diving
There are a couple of dive operations on Aitutaki where experienced guides will be ready to show you the best that Aitutaki offers in scuba diving. Beautiful corals, fish (including lionfish) and pelagics.
Sport Fishing
Fishing is popular out of Aitutaki and in fact fishing competitions are held on Aitutaki also
Land-based activities
On Aitutaki there are quite a few land-based activities to be enjoyed.
- Cycling around the island and visiting places of interest
- Taking in an Island Night with colourful and beautiful Polynesian dance displays. Usually accompanied by a local feast with food cooked in an underground oven and served smorgasbord style.
- Horseback riding on Aitutaki.
- Play a round of Golf at the 18-hole course of the Aitutaki Golf Club. Clubs are available for rental around NZ$10.00 and green fees are about the same price.
- Have a local Polynesian massage and relax with a capital R!
