Aitutaki Places of Interest
Aitutaki is a leisurely remote atoll but does have a number of places of interest.
Maungapu
This is the highest point on the main island of Aitutaki. Though only around 125 metres (410 feet) high, the grassy look out point provides a panoramic 360 view of Aitutaki island, the vast lagoon and the other islets (motu) that border the lagoon.
Arutanga
Arutanga is the island's main township. Places of interest include the main wharf, with its access channel through the reef to the outer ocean. The old missionary church is of particular interest and dates back to the 19th century when the Christian religion was introduced to Aitutaki by visiting missionaries such as John Williams. Williams was the first missionary to the Cook Islands and his first port of call was on Aitutaki rather than the main island of Rarotonga. The building blocks were made out of coral and lime.
Ministry of Marine Resources
Here you can see baby turtles and giant clams, and learn more about the marine life of the lagoon and surrounding ocean. The Ministry of Marine Resources is not open at weekends.
